Governor Newsom Appoints Joe McCullough as ABC Director

Sacramento – Governor Gavin Newsom announced the appointment of Joseph McCullough as director of the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) on September 27, 2023.

McCullough began his career as an agent in ABC’s San Francisco District Office and has been instrumental in furthering ABC’s mission through his leadership in a variety of assignments. He managed the Stockton District Office and the Northern Division Special Operations Unit.

Director McCullough previously served as the deputy division chief in headquarters where he was responsible for oversight of statewide training, development of policy and procedure, and awarding grants to allied law enforcement agencies. He also previously served as division chief in Northern Division, and chief deputy director prior to his appointment.

McCullough graduated from California State University, Sacramento with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice.
