Executive Order Streamlines Processes for ABC Licensees Impacted by Los Angeles Fires

Sacramento – Today, Governor Gavin Newsom issued an executive order outlining resources and relief for businesses impacted by the Los Angeles fires. The order offers several options for Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control license holders to continue business.

The executive order offers flexibility in certain sections in the state’s Business and Professions Code to ensure businesses can continue operations in new locations as seamlessly as possible. It suspends several existing restraints, including proximity and time requirements. Additionally, certain fees will be deferred or waived for affected businesses.

“Governor Newsom and ABC are going to extraordinary lengths to ensure that businesses affected by the historic firestorms can get back on their feet quickly,” said ABC Director Joseph McCullough. “From manufacturers and wholesalers to bars, restaurants and convenience stores, ABC licensees are a key part of California’s economy and major employers across the state. We appreciate the governor taking firm action to ensure they can rebuild and resume normal business.”

The order is specific to licensed locations affected by the Los Angeles fires. It also helps licensees relocate their businesses within Los Angeles County if their location was damaged or destroyed.

Through the executive order, existing restrictions on proximity and time requirements may be waived for impacted licensees for a period of one year. Additionally, certain waiting periods and requirements to issue Interim operating permits have been streamlined, which will aid licensees to quickly begin operations at a new location.

In addition to the governor’s executive order, ABC agents and licensing professionals are actively assessing which businesses have been damaged or destroyed to provide better direct service to licensees. ABC personnel are also reaching out directly to impacted licensees.

Licensees with questions about their eligibility under the executive order or other licensing questions should call ABC’s dedicated helpline at (916) 562-1243 or e-mail lafire@abc.ca.gov. Additionally, ABC has added a list of frequently asked questions to its advisory for impacted licensees.

“As a department, we appreciate the governor’s decisive action to help our licensees,” McCullough said. “This is an ongoing situation, and we will continue to provide the level of service and support our licensees expect from our ABC team.”
