INVESTIGATOR JOB OPPORTUNITIES

    The Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control employs investigators in various locations throughout the State. An investigator with the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control is a non-uniformed, sworn peace officer who performs the full range of peace officer duties and responsibilities in the accomplishment of his/her assignments. The work of an investigator generally consists of:

    Determining suitability for licensure of those who wish to be licensed to manufacture, transport and sell alcoholic beverages within the State; conducting investigations to detect or verify suspected violations of provisions of all Federal, State, county and city laws in and about licensed premises; locating and interviewing accused persons and witnesses and analyzing and evaluating their testimony; examining a variety of records to secure or verify information concerning suspected violations and violators; contacting and interviewing individuals and representatives of business or governmental organizations; gathering, assembling, preserving and reporting facts, statements, or affidavits and other evidence for use in legal actions; making arrests; investigating complaints; investigating the financial and moral character of applicants for alcoholic beverage licenses; appearing as a witness and arranging for the appearance of witnesses to present testimony in criminal or administrative actions; serving legal papers; interpreting and explaining the provisions of the laws, rules and regulations of the Alcoholic Beverage Control Act and Business and Professions Code; cooperating, training and maintaining liaison with Federal, State and local law enforcement agencies; preparing correspondence and reports of investigations; recommending approval or denial of applications and disciplinary action to be taken; may develop program investigation policies which specifically require investigatory or law enforcement expertise.

     

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:


    Applicants are required to meet the provisions of California Penal Code Section 832 and complete training courses prescribed by the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST)

    The minimum qualifications for the Investigator Assistant position are:

      Education: Equivalent to completion of two years of college (60 semester hours) with a major in criminal justice, law enforcement, criminology, or police science. (Students in their sophomore year of college will be admitted to the examination, but they must produce evidence of completion of the required 60 semester hours before they can be considered eligible for appointment.)

    The minimum qualifications for the Investigator position are:

    Either Pattern I

      Equivalent to graduation from an accredited college/university with either a:

      1. Major in criminal justice, law enforcement, or criminology.
        OR
      2. Minor in criminal justice, law enforcement, or criminology with evidence that the following courses have been completed: introduction to criminal justice, introduction to criminal law, basic investigation, evidence, criminal procedure, philosophy of law, and an internship. (Students in their senior year in college will be admitted to the examination, but they must produce evidence of graduation or its equivalent before they can be considered eligible for appointment.
    OR Pattern II
      Education: Equivalent to completion of two years of college with a major in criminal justice, law enforcement, criminology, or police science. (Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.) Applicants who are being considered for Investigator positions assigned as “Peace Officer” status (as defined by California state law) must possess the educational equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade. AND

      Experience: Two years of experience as a peace officer (as defined in the California Penal Code Section 830 et. seq.) performing investigative work as part of the regular enforcement activity, police detective, or as an investigator performing comparable investigative work in a public or private agency or in the armed services and possession of, or eligibility for, the Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Basic Certificate or Specialized Investigator Basic Certificate.

    OR Pattern III

      Education: Equivalent to completion of two years of college with a major in criminal justice, law enforcement, criminology, or police science. (Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.) Applicants who are being considered for Investigator positions assigned as “Peace Officer” status (as defined by California state law) must possess the educational equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade. AND

      Experience: One year of experience in the California state service performing duties at a level comparable to those of either an Investigator Assistant, Special Investigator Assistant, or in an investigation assignment in the class of Management Services Technician, Range B. (Applicants who have completed six months of service in the class of Investigator Assistant, Special Investigator Assistant, or Management Services Technician, Range B, will be admitted into the examination, but they must satisfactorily complete one year of experience in the class before they can be considered eligible for appointment.)


    SALARY:


    Investigator Assistant Salary Range: $2987 - $3565 per month

    Investigator Salary Range A: $3902 - $4704 per month
    Investigator Salary Range B: $4454 - $5631 per month
    Investigator Salary Range C: $4888 - $6194 per month

    The Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control has offic es in Alameda, Contra Costa, Fresno, Humboldt, Kern, Los Angeles, Monterey, Orange, Riverside, Sacramento, San Diego, San Francisco, San Joaquin, San Luis Obispo, Santa Clara, Shasta, Sonoma, Sutter and Ventura counties.
