INVESTIGATOR JOB OPPORTUNITIES

    The Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control employs investigators in various locations throughout the State. An investigator with the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control is a non-uniformed, sworn peace officer who performs the full range of peace officer duties and responsibilities in the accomplishment of his/her assignments. The work of an investigator generally consists of:

    Determining suitability for licensure of those who wish to be licensed to manufacture, transport and sell alcoholic beverages within the State; conducting investigations to detect or verify suspected violations of provisions of all Federal, State, county and city laws in and about licensed premises; locating and interviewing accused persons and witnesses and analyzing and evaluating their testimony; examining a variety of records to secure or verify information concerning suspected violations and violators; contacting and interviewing individuals and representatives of business or governmental organizations; gathering, assembling, preserving and reporting facts, statements, or affidavits and other evidence for use in legal actions; making arrests; investigating complaints; investigating the financial and moral character of applicants for alcoholic beverage licenses; appearing as a witness and arranging for the appearance of witnesses to present testimony in criminal or administrative actions; serving legal papers; interpreting and explaining the provisions of the laws, rules and regulations of the Alcoholic Beverage Control Act and Business and Professions Code; cooperating, training and maintaining liaison with Federal, State and local law enforcement agencies; preparing correspondence and reports of investigations; recommending approval or denial of applications and disciplinary action to be taken; may develop program investigation policies which specifically require investigatory or law enforcement expertise.

     

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:


    The minimum qualifications for the Investigator Trainee position are:

      Equivalent to completion of two years (60 semester hours) of college with a major in police science, criminal justice, law enforcement, criminology, administration of justice, public administration, or auditing. (Registration as a sophomore student in a recognized institution will admit applicants to the examination, but they must produce evidence of successful completion of the curriculum before they can be considered eligible for appointment.)

    The minimum qualifications for the Investigator I position are:

    Either Pattern I

      Education: Equivalent to graduation from college or an equivalent degree approved by the Bureau of Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education under the provisions of California Educational Code Division 10, Part 59, Chapter 3 with either:

      1. A major in police science, criminal justice, law enforcement, criminology, administration of justice, public administration, or auditing.
        OR
      2. A minor (21 semester units or 31.5 quarter units)in police science, criminal justice, law enforcement, criminology, or administration of justice, with evidence that an internship and the following courses have been completed: introduction to criminal justice; introduction to criminal law; basic investigation; evidence; criminal procedure; and philosophy of law. Registration as a senior student in a recognized institution will admit applicants to the examination, but they must produce evidence of successful completion of the curriculum and the prescribed courses before they may be considered eligible for appointment.)
    OR Pattern II
      Education: Equivalent to completion of two years of college with a major in police science, criminal justice, law enforcement, criminology, administration of justice, public administration, or auditing and,

      Experience: Two years of experience as a police officer/deputy sheriff performing preliminary investigative work as part of the regular enforcement activity.

    OR Pattern III

      Education: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade and,

      Experience: Either:

    1. One year of experience in the California state service performing duties comparable to an Investigator Trainee, Alcoholic Beverage Control. (Six months of service as an Investigator Trainee will admit applicants to the examination, but they must satisfactorily complete one year of experience in either of these classes before they can be considered eligible for appointment.)
      OR

    2. One year of experience as a police detective or as an investigator performing comparable investigative work in a public or private agency or in the armed services.


    SALARY:


    Investigator Trainee Salary Range: $2658 - $3021 per month

    Investigator I Salary Range A: $3472 - $3987 per month
    Investigator I Salary Range B: $3964 - $4773 per month

    The Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control has offices in Alameda, Fresno, Humboldt, Kern, Los Angeles, Monterey, Orange, Riverside, Sacramento, San Diego, San Francisco, San Joaquin, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Santa Clara, Shasta, Sonoma and Sutter counties.
