Governor Schwarzenegger Appoints Steve Hardy Director of the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control
"Steve brings an immense amount of knowledge and expertise from his policy background, advocacy experience, public service and police training that make him uniquely qualified to serve as director," said Governor Schwarzenegger. "I also want to thank Dave Goss for his hard work and dedication to the people of California as acting director of the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control."
Hardy has nearly 25 years of experience in state government. Since 1998, he has served as staff director for the California State Senate Committee on Governmental Organization. In this capacity, Hardy manages committee staff and is responsible for analyzing legislation regarding Alcoholic Beverage Control, Gaming, Fair Political Practices Commission (FPPC), Horse Racing and the California State Lottery. He previously held the positions of principal consultant and associate consultant with the California Senate Committee on Governmental Organization. Previously, Hardy served as a legislative advocate for the California State Employees' Association from 1980 to 1986. His experience also includes five years as a police officer with the San Francisco City Police Department.
Hardy is an active member of his community and served as a member of the Vacaville City Council from 2002 to 2007. From 1987 to 1991, he served as an elected member on the Vacaville Unified School District Board of Trustees, where he served one term as president of the Board. Additionally, he is a former member of the Institute of Governmental Advocates and the Vacaville Human Services Commission. Hardy served as chair of the Solano County Drug Abuse Advisory Council from 1978 to 1979
"I am greatly honored the Governor has asked me to serve as the director of ABC," said Hardy. "I look forward to continuing my public service with distinction and honor through this important role." Hardy, 64, of Vacaville, earned a Masters degree in public administration from the University of Southern California and a Bachelor of Arts degree in administration of justice from Golden Gate University. This position requires Senate confirmation and the compensation is $142,965. Hardy is a Democrat.
The Department is responsible for the administration, licensing and compliance for regulating the manufacture and sale of alcoholic beverages in California.
